Community Description: | Building better writers through articles on little-known topics and reviews of all media |
The Project
Anagnorisis Awakening is a community dedicated to building a better writer. Each month, Gehayi and ZeldaQueen post essays, articles, and rants on a variety of topics, along with reviews of just about anything they can get their hot hands on -- movies, books, webcomics, toys, it's all good!
Each month, both ladies with post at least one essay/article/rant and one review to this community.
The Players
Gehayi stumbled into freelance editing because her friends started writing original male/male romance and had gotten used to her proofing their work when they were writing Potterverse fanfic. Then it turned out that beta-ing Potterverse fanfic--and critiquing both fanfic and published books--had left her with an editor's skillset. She loves fantasy, especially fairy tales and stories based on the folklore of non-European cultures, science fiction, mysteries and historicals and reads almost constantly. She does not often go to the movies because, well, expense, but she does spend a lot of time listening to stories on YouTube. As for writing, she's gradually slipping out of fanfic and into original works.
ZeldaQueen has a BA in English Writing and Literature and a desire to do something interesting with it. She loves fantasy (especially folklore from all cultures) and science fiction. She also enjoys comic book movies and will usually see film adaptations of books she loves, even if she probably shouldn't.
The Objectives
In Poetics, Socrates described anagnorisis as the moment when a character discovered their role in their story: "a change from ignorance to knowledge, producing love or hate between the persons destined by the poet for good or bad fortune" (1452a)
Those who have followed their sporkings know that Gehayi and ZeldaQueen have a lot to say on cliches, common plot mistakes, and lack of research. It is their hope that Anagnorisis Awakening, might educate writers, be they professional, aspiring, fanfiction, and so on, inspiring their own anagnorisis. In short, the goal of their community is to build a better writer.
The writings of the community are not going to be about sentence structures or writing conventions or basic lessons on writing. They're going to be about little things that seem to slip through the cracks, not just for writing itself, but for things that make for good writing fodder. Things like:
Through their reviews, Gehayi and ZeldaQueen intend to not just dissuade readers away from poor media, but to promote good media, especially works that fly under the radar.
And, of course, the most important goal of the entire venture is for everyone to learn and have a ton of fun in the process!

The writings of the community are not going to be about sentence structures or writing conventions or basic lessons on writing. They're going to be about little things that seem to slip through the cracks, not just for writing itself, but for things that make for good writing fodder. Things like:
- Cliches and overused elements in fantasy literature
- Awesome women, both in real life and folklore, who tend to get overlooked
- Incorrect beliefs that always are spread around about medieval life
- Less-discussed monsters, urban legends, and other such supernatural things
Through their reviews, Gehayi and ZeldaQueen intend to not just dissuade readers away from poor media, but to promote good media, especially works that fly under the radar.
And, of course, the most important goal of the entire venture is for everyone to learn and have a ton of fun in the process!

Why a Patreon? Well, mostly for the benefits of you, our collective readership, and us, Gehayi and ZeldaQueen. Those who pledge to the Patreon will gain access to all sorts of cool rewards and perks, including:
- Shout-outs and thanks – New donors will receive a most hearty welcome and thanks in the next post made after their initial donation and some donors will continue to be thanked for each post made for as long as they donate.
- Early access to content – At the beginning of each month, we will post all our work on this Patreon, before posting it on Agnorsis Awakening according to our schedule. That means that by donating, you get immediate access to an entire month’s worth of articles, essays, and reviews.
- Polls – Periodically, we’ll hold polls here to determine what the next essay topic will be, what we’ll review next, what movie you’d like us to review, etc. Donors will be able to get in on helping us decide what we subject ourselves to.
- Movie Reviews – Every now and then, we’ll see a movie still in theaters and write up a review on it. Sometimes, we’ll let you, dear readers, decide what it is! Want to get our opinion on a movie you’re really looking forward to? Want to send us to the most mind-meltingly terrible film on the marquee? Those things can happen!
- Discord Chats - For those who donate a certain amount, access is given to a Discord server where they can hang out for one hour with Gehayi and ZeldaQueen. Questions can be asked, suggestions can be given, and silly conversation can be had.
More information on the rewards and how to get them is provided on the Patreon page. Head on over and check it out!
